2012 Toy and Holiday Gift Drive for Long Island Victims of Hurricane Sandy
My friend Lisa has put this together.
As you all know, Long Island was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy on October 29th, 2012 leaving millions without electric, hot water, heat and food for weeks and even worse..lives lost and .thousands without homes. We have all been affected by this devastating storm in some way or another with loss of electric, food, work, personal belongings or more.
Local, federal, and private organizations have been working day and night to restore our communities in every way possible providing shelters, food pan…
tries and hot meals at churches, fire houses and schools, offering tons of free services and more. It’s a slow process but with everyone’s help and positive attitudes, I believe we will rebuild and make Long Island better than it ever was!
Many of you have wanted to help or have even helped and want to do more but don’t know how. We have even been contacted by small children asking how they can help. Here’s what we came up with and hope for you all to join:
Over the next few weeks while we are out shopping for gifts for our families, friends and loved ones, what if we each pick up one extra gift for a family who won’t be able to have a Christmas this year due to the loss of their homes or homes being badly damaged by the storm? It doesn’t have to be expensive, even just a $5.00 gift!
From now until Saturday December 15th, we will be collecting new, unwrapped toys, household gifts, and gift cards for those less fortunate hard working families who lost their homes or whose homes were badly damaged from Hurricane Sandy. These gifts will be delivered to families throughout Long Island starting with the hardest hit areas first. We will have numerous “drop-off” locations throughout Long Island in Bohemia, Patchogue, Miller Place, Rocky Point, Port Jeff, East Setauket, Shirley/Mastic and more.
Suggested items that we are looking for:
Boys and girls toys (ANY AGE), housewarming type of gifts for new homes such as picture frames, candle gift sets, dish sets, glass and mugs, pots, pans, decorative items such as paintings, wall decor, bathroom sets, towels, sheets sets, comforters and quilts, etc. Other suggestions are welcomed and appreciated!
Items we will not be collecting (such as clothing, coats and used items) should be donated to your local church or other organization.
IF YOU KNOW OF ANY INDIVIDUAL OR FAMILY WHO WERE SEVERELY AFFECTED BY HURRICANE SANDY AND WHO ARE IN NEED, PLEASE CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY!!
This is a public event so we ask that you invite all your friends on facebook to join us to help spread the word and holiday cheer. If you would like to donate a gift, please contact Lisa Lemp (info below) to find the drop-off location nearest to you. If you are out of state, we will send you an address where donations can be mailed to.
